At least 10 Rajdhani Paribahan buses were stopped on the Dhaka-Aricha highway by some leaders and activists of the university branch of Chhatra Dal on the charge of hitting a private car belonging to a relative of a leader of Jahangirnagar University branch of Chhatra Dal. Later, the buses were released at midnight on the assurance of ‘compensation’.
On Thursday (January 30), at around 7:30 pm, Chhatra Dal leaders and activists stopped the Rajdhani Paribahan buses one by one on the Aricha-bound lane of the Dhaka-Aricha highway adjacent to Bishmail Gate. It was decided to release them around midnight.
It is learnt that a Rajdhani Paribahan bus hit the private car of Murad, a former student of the university, in the Balibhadra area of Ashulia. This damaged some parts of the private car, including the looking glass. Soon after, 10 Rajdhani Paribahan buses were stopped at Bishmail Gate demanding compensation. The incident was led by Selim Reza, joint convener of Jahangirnagar University branch of Chhatra Dal, who is a former student of the 40th batch of the Anthropology Department. Selim Reza was accompanied by a few other leaders and activists, but their identities are not known.
Selim Reza said that on Thursday, a Rajdhani Paribahan bus hit his relative Murad's private car. They moved two buses on the road to protect the damaged vehicle. Later, when he called the bus lineman, he behaved arrogantly, resulting in the buses being stopped. However, he claimed that no buses were stopped, only some buses were moved to one side of the road. Later, the buses were released after the bus authorities assured compensation.
In this regard, Zahid Hasan, the driver of bus number 71, said that before he realized anything, some people came and stopped the bus, took the keys and left, leaving the buses lying on the road.
Jahangirnagar University Proctor AKM Rashidul Alam said that the administration will take appropriate action after learning the details of the incident.
